Morocco : of sand, dunes and dromedaries

posted at 16:57:11 on 01/24/05 by David Arnaud

So, I'm back home after a week spent in Morocco, shooting climbing and mountain biking in the Ouarzazate area. The place is pretty different from what I saw last year during my paddling trip in the Atlas. There the land is much dryer and desertic, and we could even enjoy the beauty of the dunes in Merzouga, a village far east of Ouarzazate, close from the algerian border.

We had a very sunny week, but very cold at the same time ! It was often freezing at night, and 95% of the hotels in the area don't have any form of heating to offer, apart from hot soups and spicy meals... So while we only needed a t-shirt during the day, at night a good sleeping bag was often a very appreciated addition to the covers provided by the hotels...

Riding the dunes on a mountain bike proved to be a pretty exhausting but rewarding experience for Cyril Lagneau, ex-dowhnhill worldcup competitor.

The Todra valley proved to be an excellent place for climbing ; with lots of walls and boulders, the climbers had a full array of spots in a very scenic environment.

The Dades river and its valley, on the contrary, wasn't a good place for the climbers due to the poor quality of its fragile boulders and walls. But it made a very decent spot for the mountain bikers, who seemed to enjoy the place a lot!

As a conclusion, if you're still not convinced that Morocco is a great place to visit, wheither it is for its food, its landscapes, its people or a thousand more reasons, I'm afraid there's nothing more I can do for you !

Enjoy !
