My new (temporary) home : the Reunion island !

09/28/04 13:55:39 - Posted by David Arnaud -

That's it, I've moved to the Reunion island. Don't know where this island is ? Have a look at this map :

The Reunion island, in the Indian Ocean

This little island is located in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar, about 10 000 km from France, to which it belongs. The island has made itself a reputation among sports enthousiats as a paradise. It offers superb surfing, worldclass trekking and canyoning, and very good whitewater as well... and the good news is, I'll stay here until December !

More Lachine pics

09/09/04 15:58:49 - Posted by David Arnaud -

I know, I know, it took me quite a long time to get these pictures online. But have you ever struggle with the french administration to start your company ? That can keep you busy for some time indeed, and that is not as much fun as surfing the Lachine waves in Montreal, especially when you have a jetski at hand that can bring you to Maverick, the biggest and most powerful wave you can surf on the St Lawrence.

Is this funny... or scary ?

08/30/04 20:53:06 - Posted by David Arnaud -

Alex Dimitriou just came back from the Olympic Games, where he competed for the Greek team. As you know, a LOT of money was spent to ensure safety during the events. And yes, Alex may have been safe, considering this picture. Go have a look, it's worth the click.

08/27/04 06:49:18 - Posted by David Arnaud -

After yesterday's airscrew, here's now a complete sequence of a helix, performed once again on the Lachine waves in Montreal. Did I mention I'm having a really good time there ? ;-)

Inside the big moves - Airscrew

08/26/04 17:12:17 - Posted by David Arnaud -

Wanna know what an airscrew looks like from inside ? Take a look at those few stills... They were collected from the footage I made today on the Lachine rapids in Montreal. I'm pretty excited I must say ! I'm working on the helix footage right now, so come back tomorrow for more stuff of this kind...

Bravo Benoit !

08/24/04 03:32:27 - Posted by David Arnaud -

Busy as I am surfing and having fun in Montreal (doh!), I still did my best to follow the Olympic Games and especially the slalom races. As you may know, a French took gold in K1 men : his name is Benoit Peschier. I am even more pleased by his victory that we've been regularly competing against each other a few years ago, when we were 15/16 years old, in a time when I was still paddling slalom. I even remember beating him on a few occasions, but to be honest he was leading most of the time ;-)

Benoit Peschier

Since then we've taken different paths, but I always kept an eye on what he was up to, thinking that I could have been an international slalom racer as well, just as he is... if only I hadn't fallen into the dark side of kayaking, which is freestyle and creeking ! Hehe. We just had different motivations and expectations from kayaking, and the good thing about this sport is that it can fulfill many different destinies. I guess that's just what we're all doing everytime we paddle, and Benoit just did so the other day.

Bravo Benoit !

Surfing the Lachine - James Bond style

08/24/04 02:40:56 - Posted by David Arnaud -

I finally found some time for an update ! The last 2 weeks have been really fun here in Montreal, especially with the Riot crew's new toy, a powerful jetski ! We're getting many more rides than usual, and some new angles for pictures. Anyway, I was yesterday in Big Joe doing some filming with my headcam, and here's what I saw :

Surfing the Lachine, James Bond style

Explanation : I was in Big Joe doing some filming with my headcam. I looked on my right to watch Corran on his surfboard in Mojo, a smaller wave next to Big Joe, when all of a sudden Fisher appeared on the jet ski, litterally flying over the waves. Wow !

Stay tuned for more stunning shots and pics of the Orbit, Inferno and Nitro in action here in Montreal !

Off to Montreal - still switchin' !

08/09/04 00:44:00 - Posted by David Arnaud -

I'm off to Montreal for 3 weeks. There, I'll be mainly surfing & freestylin' on the Ottawa, the Lachines, and other rivers in the area, including a short tour in the US and a stop at the Black River and the Rt 3 wave. I'll team up with the usual suspects of the Riot gang - Ben Brown, Steve Fisher, Rusty Sage and many others will be in town at a time or another during my stay.

Corsica, Morocco, Siberia, now Canada and the Reunion island next september : nothing to really complain about !

This is certainly what I like best about kayaking : switching continuously from creeking to playboating to racing to expedition kayaking to surfing to... basically whatever you want to do (or can think of doing) with your kayak !

If you're just practicing one of these, you're missing a whole world of feelings and experiences. Enjoy the difference !
