Paddling the Ardeche creeking gems

After a few aerial sessions at Hawaii sur Rhone, it is time for a change! It's been raining a lot recently, and all the small creeks of the area were flooded at some time.


After waiting patiently for these usually dry rivers to get back to acceptable levels, a few friends and I launched a 4-day commando to paddle the nicest runs around.

I know it's been a while since my last update, but I'm coming now with a load of cool pics so I hope you'll forgive me. As you may have heard, this year's Lyon River Festival is "postponed" to 2006. This is extremely bad news, and seeing the following pics probably won't be a consolation!

From my point of view, Yak had the reputation of making simple, affordable gear which was good but couldn't match with the market's high end equipment. Well, their new range is probably gonna change this perception ; their products have been greatly improved over the last few years and can now satisfy even the most demanding paddlers (and I think I'm one).

Ok, the title is a bit exagerated, but my first session of the year at Hawaii/Rhone was really cold. But the waterlevel was so appealing that we were a small group on the wave, enjoying some snow, a decent wind and freezing temperatures.

Kayak & Raft Video Game : update

Maybe you remember last october, when I first talked about a kayaking video game I had the chance to work on. Well, I went back to the development studio yesterday to test the latest version. The game now has a definitive title : "Wild Water Adrenaline", and will be released in a few weeks, around end of march, on Playstation 2 only.

Regarding the game itself, a lot of improvements were made during the last four months. In particular, I found the currents and their trajectories to be much more realistic ; also, the kayak's and raft's behaviour have been finetuned nicely. While the kayak is very manoeuvrable but a bit more tricky to handle, the raft has more inertia and is easier to play.

As expected, the kayaker is now able to boof ; but as in reality, you need a precise timing to successfully land off big waterfalls! While the raft is "instant fun" since it's very easy to handle, it took me more time to get used to the kayaker's controls. But once you're comfortable with it, it really pays off in terms of precision and speed, and it makes a very different challenge. One of the best features of this game is certainly the multiplayer mode, in which the raft's 4 teammates are controlled by 4 different players. It takes some good coordination to get the raft moving correctly, but that's a lot of fun for sure.

Also, there are several rivers featured, all different in terms of gradient, volume, landscape... and the game brings you to New Zealand, France, Canada, and the US. Very cool !

  • surfinpope: Does the game have that place called Lachine? Due to alpha tester bias it probably has the Hawaii Sur Rhone. There needs to be a crazy, cursing New Zealander on a jet ski that tries to hit you. That would make it very life like.

    are the river currents and rapids realistic? Do you have free reign alowed anywhere on the river that you want to go?
  • David Arnaud: Regarding tricks, one developper was able to do rock-360s, but the game is about going fast above all. It's not a playboat/freestyle game. To answer Peter, there are 4 different rivers featured, some narrow, some larger with more volume. The whole game is quite realistic, except for the fact that things tend to be a bit exagerated (more gradient, higher waterfalls...) to be more entertaining. Also, the kayaker gets air more easily on waterfalls, pretty funny, especially if you manage to boof correctly. And you're totally free to get wherever there's water, or even paddle up the river if the current isn't too strong there. I should get a video clip soon, I'll put it online asap so you can have a better idea of what it looks like.
